The Afro-Cuban Folkloric Workshop will present one of the most followed orishas (deities) named Chango.
Changó is the dynamic, captivating spirit known as the king of dance and the owner of the drum. Arguably the most popular of all the orishas in the Afro-Cuban Lukumi tradition, he represents masculine beauty, power, passion and virility. When one thinks of “living life to the fullest”, this is the essence of Changó. Endlessly resourceful and a lover of adversity, he can land on his feet no matter the time or place, extracting success under the most challenging of circumstances. Dancing Changó demands athleticism; as his dance begins, the opening movements are usually smooth, seductive, and seizing the situation. This is followed by "meta", or the middle section, with a display of elaborate steps accompanied by kicks, turns, hip rotations, rolls on the floor, and dynamic routines that will demand strength and physicality. After the dance reaches its climactic point, all are invited to join the dance and to celebrate one of the most worshipped orishas.
